The end of a difficult harvest

Finally, we have picked the last grapes of 2010. Many of the wines have finished fermenting and some are still going through their rites of passage.

Autumn Leaf

For many this was a very difficult and unpredictable harvest.  A warm winter and very hot summer led to uneven bud break and vigour. Some vineyards were completely decimated and others suffered from uneven ripening.

Due to the harsh weather, the vineyards would reach optimal sugar levels way before the grapes were physiologically ripe.  Each winemaker dealt with these issues in different ways.

They say that the 2010 will be the vintage that the winemaker battled nature. Who reigned supreme is yet to be seen but the coming months will be very interesting.
